There is a season in the Landes that nobody talks about, and it is the one we love: the tail end of the year. September, October — the light drops lower between the pines, the beaches empty out, and the estate’s park changes colour entirely.
Ceps, under the russet of the ferns
Ceps grow in abundance in the park, under the russet of the ferns. It is not a promise — some years are lean — but it is a habit of the house: you set off with a basket after the rain, you come back an hour later, and dinner is sorted.
The beaches, 8 km away, all to yourself
The Mimizan beaches are 8 km away. In September, most lifeguard posts close down and so does the crowd: the beach is yours. A little further on, the wild beach of Lespecier at Bias offers space rather than parasols.
The temperatures are pleasant, the water still warm, and the sunsets far richer.
The forest, by bike, without the heat
The network of cycle paths through the Landes forest is far more enjoyable at 22 °C than at 34 °C. This is probably the region of France where families can pedal most peacefully — flat, quiet, shaded roads.
